Narritive: How to combine image and text

Since I got excited about that book that tells about Sei Shōnagon, I wanted to see Peter Greenway´s film The Pillow Book. It was alright... I have to say I wasn´t overly excited about it, I like Greenaway´s other films more. But I did like how Greenaway combines text and images in his film, and that´s something we need to explore in this Narrative unit. Text is on the background of the scenes, on top of the scene, on paper, on the body of the actors… even on the tongue of one character.

Koska innostuin niin kovasti Mia Kankimäen kirjasta, päätin katsoa Peter Greenawayn elokuvan The Pillow Book, koska en ole aikaisemmin nähnyt sitä. Täytyy sanoa, että en ole superinnostunut elokuvasta, mielestäni Greenawaylla on parempiakin elokuvia kuin tämä. Mutta Greenaway yhdistää hienosti tekstiä ja kuvaa The Pillow Bookissa, ja sitä meidän on tarkoitus tutkia tällä Narrative-kurssilla. Tekstiä kulkee elokuvan taustalla, kuvan päällä, sitä on paperilla ja ihmisten vartaloilla ja kasvoilla… jopa erään miehen kielessä.

Narrative: Random thoughts

Yesterday I was reading a book called M´as-tu vue, that tells about Sophie Calle´s art. I really like her work, because she puts herself 100% into her projects. They are really personal, but at the same time there is something universal in them. We saw Sophie Calle´s exhibition on April at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art and it was so good I almost cried. It was an installation that captures on film the expression of people seeing the ocean for the first time.

I also got a package from Finland and there was a book called "Asioita jotka saavat sydämen lyömään nopeammin" (Thing that make your heart beat faster) by Mia Kankimäki. I felt like that the first paragraph of the book was telling about my life couple years ago! The book is about Mia Kankimäki and how she takes a break from her job and travels to Japan to study Japanese court lady Sei Shōnagon´s Pillow Book (Makura No Sōshi). Her book reminds me of our trip to Japan on April, because she travels in the same area in Kioto as we did. I took loads of photos in Japan and my plan was to put some of them to my blog, but my laptop broke in the summer. So people, don´t forget to do a backup of your images! (I´m still hoping I´m going to find a way to save those images)


Eilen lueskelin Sophie Callen taiteesta kertovaa paksua tiiliskiveä nimeltä M´as-tu vue. Tykkään todella paljon hänen töistään, koska hän on niissä 100%:sti mukana. Ne ovat todella henkilökohtaisia, mutta samalla niissä on jotain yleismaailmallista, johon voi samaistua. Me näimme Sophie Callen installaation viime huhtikuussa Hara museossa Tokiossa, ja se oli niin hieno, että melkein itkin. Installaatio koostui videoista, joille oli kuvattu ihmisiä, jotka näkivät meren ensimmäistä kertaa elämässään.

Postissa saapui eilen ihana ylläri eli Mia Kankimäen kirja Asioita jotka saavat sydämen lyömään nopeammin. Kirjan alkusanat ovat kuin suoraan omasta elämästäni pari vuotta sitten. Kirja kertoo Mian vuorotteluvapaasta ja japanilaisesta hovinaisesta nimeltä Sei Shonagon. Lukiessani sitä tulee mieleen meidän Japanin matka viime huhtikuussa, koska Mia liikkuu samoilla kulmilla Kiotossa. Olisin laittanut matkasta kuvia tänne blogiin, mutta läppärini kosahti kesällä. Muistakaa siis ihmiset varmuuskopioida omat kuvanne! (toiveissani on, että kone vielä kertaalleen suostuisi toimimaan, niin voisin pikaisesti poimia kuvat talteen)

Narrative: From Aristotle to Shakespeare

Alright. I think I need to start from the beginning… First there was light (bad joke, sorry). When I started to look for information about narrative structures, I found out that Greek philosopher Aristotle created his own key ingredients for a story or a tragedy actually. And great English writer Shakespeare had his own Five Act Structure for a narrative. Here they are for you to enjoy!

Theory of Tragedy: Aristotle

"According to Aristotle, there are six constituent parts of a tragedy: 

Plot, Character, Thought, Diction, Song and Spectacle."

Shakespeare's Five Act Structure:

Act I: Exposition or Introduction

Act II: Rising Action

Act III: Climax

Act IV: Falling Action

Act V: Dénoument or Resolution

Etsin tänään tietoa tarinan rakenteesta ja päädyin aloittamaan ihan alusta eli Aristoteleesta ja hänen tragediateoriastaan. Löysin myös tietoa Shakespearen viiden kohtauksen rakenteesta, jota hän käytti kirjoittaessaan näytelmiään. Olkaapa hyvät!

Aristoteleen mukaan tragediassa on kuusi olennaista osaa: 

juoni, hahmo, ajatus, ilmaisutyyli, laulu ja spektaakkeli

Phui… Onpa tätä asiaa vaikea kääntää suomeksi. Melkein vaatisi jonkun asiantuntijan asialle, mutta tässä nyt oma versioni aiheesta.

Narrative photography – Tarinallinen valokuva

Miten kertoa tarina valokuvin? Sitä pohdittiin tänään, kun meillä käynnistyi kolme kuukautta kestävä Narrative-kurssi. Tämän kurssin aikana on tarkoitus dokumentoida omaan blogiin kurssiin liittyvästä tiedonkeruusta ja työn edistymisestä. Luvassa on siis kattava tietopaketti tarinallista valokuvaa. Kumpi muuten mielestänne olisi parempi suomenkielinen termi: kertova valokuva vai tarinallinen valokuva? Toistaiseksi käytän tuota jälkimmäistä.

Tässä alkajaiseksi vinkkejä tarinallisten valokuvien luomiseen:
- Inspiroidu kaikesta (musiikista, elokuvista, kirjoista, väreistä jne.)
- Merkitse muistikirjaan kaikki ideasi
- Keskity tarinaan, älä tekniikkaan
- Ota askel lähemmäksi kohdetta
- Valitse kuvauspaikka ajatuksella
- Poimi kuviin aitoja tunteita
- Pysy avoimena uusille tilanteille
- Viimeistele kuvat kuvankäsittelyllä

How to tell a story with photographs? Our Narrative unit started today and we got lots of information about telling stories with photos or with photos and text. One of our tasks during this unit is to document our research and development to our blog, so that´s why I´ll be posting material related to narrative photography in these three months. I´m actually quite excited about this unit!

Here are some tips about how to tell a story with photographs:
- Be inspired about everything: Music, films, books, colors etc. 
- Write down all your ideas to a notebook
- Focus on the story, not on the technique
- Get closer to your subject
- Choose your background wisely
- Capture authentic emotions
- Allow room for spontaneity
- Finish your images with Photoshop

Viime hetken joululahjavinkki – Last Minute's Christmas Gift Tip

Aina silloin tällöin mietin, että tekisinkö kamerani hihnan tilalle jonkun uuden, koska mustapunainen väriyhdistelmä tuntuu välillä vähän liian… hmm räikeältä. Päädyin äskettäin Bloom Theoryn sivuille ja sieltä löytyy upeat kokoelmat erilaisia kamerahihnoja vaativaankin makuun. :)

Jos ystäväpiirissäsi on valokuvauksen harrastajia, niin tästä vaikka ensi jouluksi lahjavinkki. Hinta on aika suolainen, mutta jos lompakosta löytyy sopivasti ylimääräistä, niin mikä ettei.
