Opening and closing doors – Aukeavat ja sulkeutuvat ovet

I've always thought that I'm quite practical person, so I was quite surprised when I realized that I like writings of great philosophers (I'm writing my dissertation at the moment). Here is an extract of Gaston Bachelard's book 'The Poetics of Space' that I really like:

"How concrete everything becomes in the world of the spirit when an object, a mere door, can give images of hesitation, temptation, desire, security, welcome and respect. If one were to give an account of all the doors one has closed and opened, of all the doors one would like to re-open, one would have to tell the story of one's entire life. But is he who opens a door and he who closes it the same being?" Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

I feel that this is true in my own life. I've open and closed some doors on purpose, and sometimes doors have closed by accident. And after that life has gone in to certain direction. When I moved to England it was supposed to be one year experiment, but now this is my third year here. One of the things I like here are the misty and foggy weathers, there is something mystical and fascinating in them. These images were taken in a foggy night in Farnham. 

Olen pitänyt itseäni aika käytännöllisenä ihmisenä, joten hieman yllätyin, kun innostuin filosofien kirjoituksista (kirjoitan parhaillaan tutkielmaa). Tässä katkelma Gaston Bachelardin kirjasta The Poetics of Space, josta tykkään kovasti:

Koen, että tämä pitää paikkansa omassa elämässäni. Olen tarkoituksella avannut ja sulkenut joitakin ovia, mutta joskus se on tapahtunut myös erehdyksessä. Ja sen jälkeen elämä on mennyt tiettyyn suuntaan. Englantiin muuttokin oli tarkoitus olla alun perin yhden vuoden kokemus, mutta olen täällä nyt kolmatta vuotta. Yksi niistä asioista joista tykkään täällä, on sumuiset englantilaiset säät, koska niissä on jotain mystistä ja kiehtovaa. Nämä kuvat on otettu yhtenä sumuisena yönä Farnhamissa. 

Go with the flow

Today I was talking with a friend about life, and how sometimes it´s good to let life take us to the right place at the right time. I´m writing about this, because I think it´s quite typical for me to decide something and then just do that no matter if it starts to feel wrong. From now on I promise not to stress so much about things. And if something doesn´t feel right, I´ll find another way. This photo shoot couple weeks ago went really smoothly. The model was fabulous Yemi.

Tänään juttelin erään ystävän kanssa siitä, että joskus on hyvä antaa elämän vain viedä oikeaan paikkaan, oikeiden ihmisten seuraan juuri oikealla hetkellä. Tämä liittyy siihen, että minulle on aika tyypillistä, että päätän jotakin ja yritän sitten vaikka hampaat irvessä viedä kerran päättämäni asian loppuun. Lupaan, että tästä lähtien alan ottaa rennommin. Ja jos joku asia ei tunnu oikealta, niin sitten etsin uuden suunnan. Kuvaussessiossa pari viikkoa sitten asiat tuntuivat sujuvat luonnostaan. Mallina toimi huipputyyppi Yemi.

Bailey's Stardust exhibition in London

We went to see David Bailey's exhibition 'Bailey´s Stardust' on Monday. For those of you, who are interested in fashion photography and portraiture, it is in the National Portrait Gallery and it's open until June 1st 2014. So there´s plenty of time to see it.

I usually like to read or hear photographers talking about their work. I find it interesting how photographers see their models. I guess my tactics have been talking to people and make them relax. On the other hand some photographers like their models to stay a bit nervous... David Bailey has said that he starts to watch them from the first minute they walk in.

Kävimme viime maanantaina katsomassa David Baileyn näyttelyn 'Bailey´s Stardust' National Portrait Galleryssa. Se on avoinna kesäkuun ensimmäiseen päivään asti, joten vielä on hyvin aikaa nähdä se, jos muotikuvaus ja henkilökuvat kiinnostavat.

Tykkään yleensä lukea ja kuulla eri valokuvaajien puhuvan työstään. On kiinnostavaa kuulla, miten eri kuvaajat suhtautuvat malleihinsa. Toistaiseksi oma taktiikkani on ollut jutella kuvattavien kanssa ja saada heidät rentoutumaan. Mutta osa valokuvaajista pitää mielellään mallinsa vähän varpaillaan... David Bailey on sanonut, että hän alkaa tarkkailla malleja siitä hetkestä lähtien, kun he astuvat ovesta sisään.

Narrative: Exhibition tips – Näyttelyvinkkejä

Oh, London! I just can´t get enough of London. Still I´m not sure, if I could live there. It´s so busy. But I´d like to try, maybe for a couple of months.

Yesterday we went to see three exhibitions at Photographer´s Gallery: Andy Warhol, David Lynch and William S. Burroughs exhibitions. They all are / were enthusiastic photographers. Warhol carried his camera with him most of the time, often he took at least 36 images a day. Warhol captured everyday details like street views. Lynch on the other hand was interested in industry, man-made things. I was expecting more cinematic images from him, colors, dramatic poses etc. William S. Burroughs´ images were probably the most interesting body of work from my point of view. I loved the roughness of his collages. And the best part of the exhibition was his quotes, the way he talked about photography. He was a writer, so he certainly had a way with words.

We also saw Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. My favourite there was the image from Erik Almås called Holy Mother. First of all the light in that image is soft as moonlight. I love that. And her headdress looks like a tutu. Really simple idea but looks striking. It makes her look like she´s a mysterious woman from the past. And her expression, I almost want to ask, what has happened to her. Perfect combination, I think.

Oi, Lontoo! En vain saa tarpeekseni siitä. Mutta siltikään en ole varma, pystyiskö asumaan siellä. Niin paljon liikennettä ja ihmisiä. Toisaalta olisi kyllä kiva kokeilla, vaikka vain muutaman kuukauden... 

Eilen kävimme Photographer´s Galleryssa, jossa on tällä hetkellä esillä kolme näyttelyä: Andy Warholin, David Lynchin ja William S. Burroughsin. He kaikki ovat tai olivat innokkaita valokuvaajia. Warhol kantoi kameraa jatkuvasti mukanaan, ja yleensä kuvasi vähintään 36 kuvaa päivässä. Warhol kuvasi mielellään arkipäiväisiä asioita, kuten katunäkymiä. David Lynch sen sijaan kuvaa mielellään teollisuusrakennuksia ja muita ihmisten tekemiä kapistuksia. Odotin Lynchin valokuvien muistuttavan enemmän hänen elokuviensa maailmaa, odotin niissä olevan väriä ja dramatiikkaa. Näistä kolmesta tykkäsin eniten Burroughsin karuista kollaaseista. Ja parasta kaikessa olivat hänen kommenttinsa valokuvauksesta. Eipä se ole toisaalta ihme, hänhän oli kirjailija, joten hän tiesi miten sanansa asettaa. 

Kävimme myös National Portrait Galleryssa, jossa oli esillä Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize 2013 kilpailutyöt. Oma suosikkini oli Erik Almasin kuva Holy Mother. Ensinäkin kuvan valaistus on yhtä pehmeä kuin kuun valo, tykkään siitä kovasti. Mallin päässä oleva 'kruunu' näyttää ihan balettitanssijan tutulta. Jos se on se, niin miten yksinkertaisella idealla voikaan saada hätkähdyttävän tuloksen. Se saa mallin näyttämään kuin hän olisi salaperäinen nainen jostain parin sadan vuoden takaa. Hänen ilmeensä on myös pysäyttävä, tekisi mieli kysyä, että mitä hänelle on oikein tapahtunut. Näistä kaikista elementeistä muodostuu täydellinen potretti.
