Exhibition tip: Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2014

One of the largest art prizes in the UK is Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. This year’s nominees are Alberto García-Alix, Jochen Lempert, Lorna Simpson and Richard Mosse. You can see their work at the The Photographers' Gallery, exhibition is open until June 22nd 2014.

My favorite was Richard Mosse. His work is a bit controversial, because he takes extremely beautiful pictures in conflict areas. He says in Christy Lange´s interview that "Beauty is one of the mainlines to make people feel something. It´s the sharpest tool in the box." When you think of it, how easy it is to forget all those war zones and conflict areas, if you don´t see images of them? Or if you see those ordinary news photographs that show you all the gory details, you might want to turn the page? Richard Mosse makes you admire the beautiful landscapes of eastern Congo, but he also makes you stop and think.

It´s also interesting that he used Kodak Aerochrome film, that was originally designed for military purposes. It gives images really strong color palette full of different shades of magenta. The film is able to register infrared light, so it was able to reveal camouflaged soldiers hiding in the landscape. (Today´s camouflage has made the film obsolete, so Kodak finished making it in 2009.)

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize on yksi Iso-Britannian merkittävimmistä taidepalkinnoista. Tänä vuonna palkinnon saajiksi ovat ehdolla Alberto García-Alix, Jochen Lempert, Lorna Simpson ja Richard Mosse. Kävimme katsomassa voittajaehdokkaiden työt The Photographers' Galleryssa. Näyttely on avoinna 22.6. asti, joten hyvin ehtii vielä. 

Oma suosikkini oli Richard Mosse. Hänen työnsä on  herättänyt keskustelua, koska hän kuvaa häikäisevän upeita kuvia konfliktialueilla. Christy Langen haastattelussa hän totesi, että "Kauneus on yksi tärkeimmistä keinoista saada ihmiset tuntemaan jotakin. Se on terävin työkalu laatikossa." Kuinka helppoa onkaan unohtaa sota-alueet, jos niistä ei näe kuvia? Tai jos näet verisiä uutiskuvia, kuinka nopeasti voitkaan kääntää sivua? Richard Mossen kuvat saivat minut samaan aikaan ihailemaan itäisen Kongon upeita maisemia ja pysähtymään. 

Mosse käyttää myös hyvin kiinnostavaa tekniikkaa. Hän on kuvannut Kodakin Aerochrome filmillä, joka on alunperin suunniteltu armeijan tarpeisiin. Se antaa kuville todella voimakkaan väripaletin, jossa korostuu magentan eri sävyt. Filmi pystyy tallentamaan infrapunasäilyn, joten sillä pystyttiin paljastamaan maastopukuiset sotilaat vehreän luonnon keskeltä. (Filmin tekniikka on nykyisin vanhentunut, joten Kodak lopetti sen valmistuksen vuonna 2009)

Narrative: A Book Full of Magic

Yay! Here is a picture of my book! It is a small booklet about everyday magic and how you can find magic around you when you just keep you eyes open at the right time. My stop motion animation is also finished today, but at the moment the file is too big to be published online. But I´ll try to make a web friendly version of it in some point.

Tässä on nyt kuva valmiista kirjastani! Se on tällainen pieni kirjanen siitä, miten elämässä voi kohdata taikuutta, jos osaa vaan pitää silmät auki oikealla hetkellä. Stop motion animaatiokin valmistui tänään, mutta se on tällä hetkellä liian iso nettiin ladattavaksi. Katsotaan, jos saisin sen jossain vaiheessa pakattua pienempää kokoon.

Narrative: Ghosts for breakfast

When I saw a film called 'a Trip to the Moon' by Georges Méliès for the first time, I was really surprised how well it was made. He was using multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted color in his work already in 1902.

This week I saw Hans Richter´s film for the first time, and I had the same feeling. It is so amazing how these filmmakers were so creative and talented, and ready to explore everything new without any preconception.

Joitain vuosia sitten, kun näin ensimmäisen kerran Georges Mélièsin filmin Matka kuuhun, olin hämmästynyt, miten taitavasti se oli tehty. Méliès käytti kaksoisvalotusta, stop motionia, ristikuvaleikkausta, häivytyksiä, filmin graafista manipulointia ja monia muita tehosteita jo 1900-luvun alussa.

Kun näin Hans Richterin elokuvan Ghosts for Breakfast tällä viikolla, koin samanlaisen ihmetyksen tunteen kuin nähdessäni Mélièsin elokuvia ensimmäistä kertaa. Miten luovia ja lahjakkaita he ovatkaan olleet, ja valmiit kokeilemaan kaikenlaista uutta ennakkoluulottomasti.

Tableau image / Tableau vivant

Tableau vivant means 'living picture'. It´s usually carefully posed and often theatrically lit.

Random Narrative

Pulp Fiction is an example of non-linear storyline. It is an American crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino. Pulp Fiction connects the intersecting story lines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, small-time criminals and a mysterious briefcase.

Frangmented + Open Ended narrative

The Tree of Lfe is an American epic experimental drama film, directed by Terrence Malick (2011). The film has artistic imaginary and fragmented non-linear narrative, and it has an open ending. The Tree of Life explores the meaning of life by the way of a middle-aged man´s childhood memories.

Repetition 

Inside Llewyn Davis is a film about a young singer Llewyn Davis. The film shows a week of his life as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. By using repetition the director of the film creates a feeling that his life is not progressing the way he wants.

Narrative: Heads Will Roll

I find Clare Strand´s photographs very interesting and recently my tutor Natasha introduced me to her films. Her films are short, black & white films which are also a bit quirky. Series is called the Conjurations. She plays with illusions and you could say less is more, because they are simple but yet quite mesmerizing. They have references to traditional magic tricks, but are still very unique.

Clare Strandin valokuvat ovat mielestäni tosi kiinnostavia, ja äskettäin tutorini Natasha kehoitti tutustumaan myös hänen videoihinsa. Kokoelman nimi on the Conjurations. Hänen elokuvansa ovat lyhyitä, mustavalkoisia, aavistuksen vinksahtaneita pätkiä, joissa hän leikkii illuusioilla. Näistä elokuvista voisi sanoa, että vähemmän on enemmän, koska elokuvat ovat lyhyitä, mutta jollain tapaa aika lumoavia. Niissä näkee perinteisten taikatemppujen vaikutuksen, mutta silmänkääntötemppu on tehty uudella, freesillä tavalla.
