Narrative structures

I´ve been collecting examples of different narratives to my work book like tableau image, random narrative, fragmented narrative, open ended and repetition.

Tableau image / Tableau vivant

Tableau vivant means 'living picture'. It´s usually carefully posed and often theatrically lit.

Random Narrative

Pulp Fiction is an example of non-linear storyline. It is an American crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino. Pulp Fiction connects the intersecting story lines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, small-time criminals and a mysterious briefcase.

Frangmented + Open Ended narrative

The Tree of Lfe is an American epic experimental drama film, directed by Terrence Malick (2011). The film has artistic imaginary and fragmented non-linear narrative, and it has an open ending. The Tree of Life explores the meaning of life by the way of a middle-aged man´s childhood memories.

Repetition

Inside Llewyn Davis is a film about a young singer Llewyn Davis. The film shows a week of his life as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. By using repetition the director of the film creates a feeling that his life is not progressing the way he wants.

Go with the flow

Today I was talking with a friend about life, and how sometimes it´s good to let life take us to the right place at the right time. I´m writing about this, because I think it´s quite typical for me to decide something and then just do that no matter if it starts to feel wrong. From now on I promise not to stress so much about things. And if something doesn´t feel right, I´ll find another way. This photo shoot couple weeks ago went really smoothly. The model was fabulous Yemi.

Kuvaussessiossa pari viikkoa sitten asiat tuntuivat sujuvat luonnostaan. Mallina toimi huipputyyppi Yemi.

Bailey's Stardust exhibition in London

We went to see David Bailey's exhibition 'Bailey´s Stardust' on Monday. For those of you, who are interested in fashion photography and portraiture, it is in the National Portrait Gallery and it's open until June 1st 2014. So there´s plenty of time to see it.

I usually like to read or hear photographers talking about their work. I find it interesting how photographers see their models. I guess my tactics have been talking to people and make them relax. On the other hand some photographers like their models to stay a bit nervous... David Bailey has said that he starts to watch them from the first minute they walk in.

"When I photograph people, directly they come through the door I´m already photographing them. You watch the way they move, and their personality, and which side of their face they prefer, and all sorts of things." David Bailey

On kiinnostavaa kuulla, miten eri kuvaajat suhtautuvat malleihinsa.

Narrative: Magical books

Artist books, notebooks, booklets, flip books, poetry books etc... We had an inspiring lecture on Thursday, our tutors introduced us to different kinds of artist books. Maybe the most important one was French poet Stéphane Mallarmé´s Un Coup de Dés. It has been suggested that his book is one of the first books that uses the idea of hypertext, in other words his book allows non-linear readings of the text. He uses careful placement of the words on the page and purposeful use of blank space.

Here are some examples of those beautiful books we saw on the lecture. I took these images with my camera phone, so I apologise the bad quality. (I desperately need a new phone)

Books by Emmanuelle Waeckerle, Richard Nash and David Rule.

Taidekirjoja, muistikirjoja, kirjasia, runokirjoja jne...

Yllä on muutamia esimerkkejä niistä kauniista taidekirjoista, joita saimme hypistellä. Otin kuvat kännykällä, joten pahoittelen niiden huonoa laatua (ostoslistalla on uusi puhelin).

Narrative: Heads Will Roll

I find Clare Strand´s photographs very interesting and recently my tutor Natasha introduced me to her films. Her films are short, black & white films which are also a bit quirky. Series is called the Conjurations. She plays with illusions and you could say less is more, because they are simple but yet quite mesmerizing. They have references to traditional magic tricks, but are still very unique.

Kokoelman nimi on the Conjurations.
