Trusting Your Intuition – Vaiston varassa

A day before our exhibition opening, on Wednesday May 20th, we had two visiting lecturers Josh Bilton and Trish Morrissey at UCA Farnham. Both lectures were really good! Josh Bilton told us about his working methods, and what struck me the most was the fact that he doesn't always have a clear idea what his project is going to be, when he starts working. His work evolves while he is making the project. And sometimes it is not the final result but it is the process itself that makes the project. That's why he documents the making of the project too. I have struggled with the fact that in UCA we had to have a clear concept for our work, and sometimes I think that more intuitive working method would suit me better.

Trish Morrissey's lecture was excellent too! I like her work a lot, my favourite is Front series. I think she is doing something very bold in that series. She is going to an intimate area, which is always interesting to me. In Front series she is temporarily taking the place of a family member, usually it is the mother figure. It is intriguing to imagine how different the image would look, if that mother figure would be there instead of her.

After the talks I had individual tutorials with both of them. It was a relief to hear their thoughts about my work, because I felt that I didn't have enough time to do my final work. I was trying to get as much experience in fashion photography, product photography and food photography this spring as possible, and in the end that lead me in to a situation when I didn't have enough time for my final work. This is why I am probably going to change my series for the London degree show at the Old Truman Brewery.

Päivää ennen kuin näyttelymme avautui, eli keskiviikkona 20.5., UCA:ssa kävi kaksi vierailevaa luennoitsijaa Josh Bilton ja Trish Morrissey. Molemmat luennoitsijat olivat tosi hyviä! Josh Bilton kertoi meille työskentelymenetelmistään, ja mikä havahdutti minut eniten oli se, kun hän kertoi, ettei hänellä usein ole työn alussa tarkkaa käsitystä siitä, millainen hänen valmis projektinsa tulee olemaan. Hänen työnsä kehittyy ja muotoutuu usein samalla kun hän tekee sitä, ja joskus valmis projekti ei olekaan se lopputuotos vaan se koko prosessi. Siksi hän yleensä dokumentoi koko projektin. Välillä olen kokenut sen hankalaksi, että UCA:ssa painotetaan niin vahvasti konseptin merkitystä. Tuntuu siltä, että minulle sopisi intuitiivisempi työskentelytapa eli enemmän omaan vaistoon luottaminen työn edetessä. 

Trish Morrisseyn luento oli myös todella hyvä! Minun suosikkini hänen tuotannostaan on sarja nimeltä Front. Mielestäni hän tekee jotain todella rohkeaa siinä sarjassa. Hänen menee intiimille aluelle, joka on mielestäni aina kiinnostavaa. Front-sarjassa hän ottaa perheenjäsenen paikan, ja yleensä se on perheen äidin paikka. On todella kutkuttavaa kuvitella millaiselta kuvat näyttäisivät jos perheen äiti olisi kuvassa hänen sijastaan.

Luentojen jälkeen meillä oli mahdollisuus saada henkilökohtaiset tutorialit molemman valokuvataitelijan kanssa. Minulle oli helpotus kuulla heidän mielipiteitään omasta työstäni, koska minulla loppui aika lopputyöni kanssa. Halusin saada kevään aikana niin paljon kokemusta muoti-, tuote- ja ruokakuvauksesta kuin mahdollista, joten loppujen lopuksi minulle ei jäänyt tarpeeksi aikaa tehdä lopputyötäni. Siksi aion vielä muuttaa kuvasarjaani Lontoon näyttelyä varten, joka alkaa 18.6. The Old Truman Breweryssä.
