Luminous Lumen Prints - Loistavat luumen kuvat

Lumen Prints – those are two difficult words to translate in Finnish! 'Lumi' is snow in Finnish, and for example 'lumen väri' means 'the colour of snow'. The lumen (lm) is also the measure of the total "amount" of visible light emitted by a source. Even though these images have a difficult name from my point of view, lumen prints look absolutely beautiful. I've been wanting to try them for couple of months, but I've been too busy writing my dissertation and shooting my final work.

To make lumen prints you need black and white photography paper (out-of-date works the best), objects to place on top pf paper, picture frame or for example plexiglass, and a film changing bag or large thick black plastic bags. It is also good to have scissors and tape. First assemble your materials ready, then place your materials on the paper in subdued lighting, put the plexiglass on top of the materials and then take the image in the sunlight. You can expose the image from 30 min to 4 hours. In the end you need to fix the image, and rinse it. It is good to scan the image before you fix it, because fixing changes the tones.

Lumen Prints, onpa siinä vaikea sanapari kääntää suomeksi. Kun sana 'lumen' merkitsee jo valmiiksi jotain, on vaikea löytää sopivaa käännöstä. Käytetään näistä kuvista vähän hölmönkuuloista muotoa 'luumen', kun ei nyt tähän hätään parempaakaan löydy. Jotta tilanne olisi erityisen sekava, lumen (lm) on myös valon määrän eli valovirran mittari. Vaikka näille kuville onkin vaikea löytää sopivaa termiä, ei se asia muutu miksikään, että ne on vaan jotenkin mielettömän kauniita. Olen halunnut pitkään kokeilla tätä tekniikkaa, mutta olen ollut liian kiireinen tutkielman ja lopputyön kanssa.  

Luumen kuvia varten tarvitset mustavalkoista valokuvapaperia (vanhentunut toimii parhaiten), esineitä tai esim. kasveja, valokuvakehyksen tai lasilevyn sekä valokuvapaperin mustan suojapussin tai paksuja, mustia muovipusseja. Sakset ja teippi on hyvä pitää myös käden ulottuvilla. Mieti ensin sommitelma valmiiksi, sen jälkeen asettele sommitelma valokuvapaperille hämärässä valaistuksessa, aseta kehys tai lasi kasvien tms. päälle, ja lopuksi vie koko paketti ulos auringonvaloon. Valotusaika vaihtelee 30 minuutista jopa neljään tuntiin. Viimeisenä vaiheena voit laittaa kuvan kiinnitysnesteeseen ja huuhdella sen. Kuva kannattaa skannata ennen kiinnitettä, koska kiinnite muuttaa kuvan sävyjä.

Finishing my final work – Lopputyön viime metreillä

Yesterday we started to paint the exhibition space at the uni for our graduation show, and today I printed last images of my final work! Time is going so fast! Can't believe I'm graduating soon. It feels a little bit unreal, that three years have gone so fast. Making the final work was more difficult than I thought, and only because I built so high expectations to myself. I wanted to make the best set of images that I've ever made and that's why making the images become so difficult. Even now I'm still doubting myself and the images that I've made, but little by little I like them more. I've gone through such a great scale of emotions in making my final work and luckily it's almost done. All I need to do is mounting and framing.

I'm going to post my final images here too, but in the meantime here are images from photographer Taryn Simon. My tutor told me about her, and I really like her work. These images are from a series 'Black Squre', which was inspired by Kazimir Malevich's famous painting. In this series she photographed obscure objects like South African flame-throwing anti-hijacking system fired on Toyota. Quite amazing!

Eilen aloitimme yliopistolla näyttelytilan maalausta lopputyönäyttelyämme varten, ja tänään tulostin viimeiset lopputyökuvani! Aika menee niin nopeasti! En melkein voi uskoa, että olen pian valmistumassa. Tuntuu jotenkin epätodelliselta, että kolme vuotta ovat menneet näin nopeasti. Lopputyön tekeminen oli vaikeampaa kuin ajattelinkaan, ja varmaankin pitkälti siitä syystä, että rakensin niin suuret odotukset lopputyötäni kohtaan. Halusin tehdä parhaan kuvasarjan, jota olen ikinä tehnyt, ja sen takia lopputyön tekeminen muodostuikin niin työlääksi. Tälläkin hetkellä epäilen vielä työtäni ja itseäni, mutta alan pikkuhiljaa pitää kuvista koko ajan enemmän. Lopputyön tekemisessä olen käynyt koko tunneskaalan läpi, mutta onneksi sarja on nyt lähes valmis. Enää on jäljellä pohjustaminen ja kehystäminen. 

Aion postata lopputyökuvani myös tänne jossain vaiheessa, mutta tällä kertaa ajattelin kertoa pikkusen Taryn Simon kuvista. Tutorini kertoi hänestä minulle, ja kiinnostuin kovasti hänen työstään. Yllä olevat kuvat ovat sarjasta 'Black Square', jonka inspiraationlähteenä toimi samanniminen teos tunnetulta taiteilijalta Kazimir Malevitšilta. Tässä sarjassa Taryn Simon kuvasi erikoisia esineitä, kuten etelä-afrikkalaista kaappauksenestävää liekinheitinsysteemiä, joka on aktivoitu Toyotassa. Aikamoista! 

Photography Show in Birmingham

We had a nice road trip on Tuesday when we visited the Photography Show in Birmingham. There we had the chance to test new lenses and cameras, we also listened to and watched a couple of demos about studio photography for example at the Lastolite stand. Soon I need to start printing and framing my final work, as such I was primarily interested in seeing different kind of frames and fine art papers. At the Hasselblad stand we got free tote bags, which is probably going to be my favourite accessory from now on. When we drove back from Birmingham we had exciting moments, because the exhaust pipe broke from my friend's car. At one point we were thinking if we could get back home safely at all, because no-one knew the anatomy of cars that well. But in the end we got home just fine.

Tiistaina kävimme Birmingamissa Photography Show'ssa, eli ihan mukava muutaman tunnin road trip sinne ja takaisin. Photography Show'ssa pääsimme testaamaan uusia objektiiveja ja kameroita, kuuntelimme myös muutaman demon, jossa näytettiin vinkkejä studiokuvaukseen mm. Lastoliten pisteellä. Koska pian edessä on lopputyön tulostaminen ja kehystäminen, olin kiinnostunut katselemaan myös erilaisia kehystys- ja paperivaihtoehtoja. Messuilta tarttui mukaan myös hieno Hasselbladin kangaskassi, jota aion kuljettaa mukana kaikkialle tästä lähtien. Pientä jännitystä sisältyi kotimatkalle, koska kaverin autosta luultavasti rikkoitui pakoputki. Jossain vaiheessa mietimme, että päästäänkö kotiin asti, kun kukaan meistä ei oikein tunne paljoakaan autojen anatomiaa, mutta kotimatka meni loppujen lopuksi ihan hyvin.

A Trip to Mystical Marrakech – Matka mystiseen Marrakechiin

In a previous post I said that I don't go to dangerous places, however recently I travelled to Marrakech, Morocco. I thought it was safe city full of tourists, but we heard from the locals that our Riad was located in the most dangerous area in the city. For example, we got instructions to stay inside after 8.00pm, and stay out of the back streets especially in the midday, when it's more quiet. After all precautions my phone got stolen from the pocket of my backpack. When I think of it later, I should have known that a pocket is not a good place to keep your phone anyway.

These warnings made me think of the situation of women in Morocco. The women we met looked content with their lives, but still their reality is different than women in Europe. For example I've never before heard instructions how to prevent kidnapping on the streets. This can be a warning that a girl gets from her father in Morocco.

Nevertheless, loosing my phone was a minor setback, and I thought that Marrakech was an interesting city. It is busy, vibrant, colourful and fascinating!

Heti sen jälkeen kun edellisessä postauksessa totesin, että en mene vaarallisiin paikkoihin, matkustimme Marrakechiin, Marokkoon. Ajattelin etukäteen, että se on turvallinen turistikohde, mutta paikallisten mukaan Riadimme sijaitsi kaupungin vaarallisimmalla alueella. Saimme ohjeeksi pysyä sisätiloissa klo kahdeksan jälkeen, ja pysytellä poissa syrjäisiltä kaduilta erityisesti keskipäivän hiljaisiin aikoihin. Kaikkien varotoimien jälkeen puhelimeni vietiin repun taskusta. Näin jälkikäteen ajatellen olisihan se pitänyt tajuta, ettei tasku ole ollenkaan turvallinen paikka puhelimelle. 

Kuulemamme varoituksen sanat saivat minut miettimään naisen asemaa Marokossa. Tapaamamme naiset näyttivät tyytyväisiltä elämäänsä, mutta he elävät silti hieman toisenlaisessa todellisuudessa kuin me täällä Euroopassa. Esimerkiksi en ole koskaan saanut vanhemmiltani neuvoja, kuinka välttää sieppaus kadulla, mutta Marokossa isä saattaa antaa vinkkejä tyttärelleen kuinka välttää tällainen tilanne.

Vaikka puhelin katosikin, olen silti sitä mieltä, että Marrakech on kokonaisuudessaan oikein mielenkiintoinen kaupunki. Se on vilkas, eloisa, värikäs ja kiehtova!

I Made a Discovery Today – Tein tänään tärkeän havainnon

I realized something important today, when photographer Lydia Goldblatt gave us a lecture and a tutorial at UCA. The lecture was interesting and the tutorial was probably one of the best tutorials I've been. She found something positive and constructive to say about everyone's work. She made me look at my work and think about myself as a photographer in a new way.

Lydia Goldblatt is very intelligent person and a great photographer. I think she is amazing! In some point of her lecture she said, that because she is not very intimidating person, she often gets commissions that involve people, who don't like to photographed or situations, which are some way delicate. So because of her personality, she gets an access to some places that others don't.

I've been thinking that it is my weakness as a photographer that I don't go to dangerous places. But actually in the future I might get an access to those places that fearless documentary photographer can't go, because I'm not an intimidating person either. I admire brave war photographers, but I know that I couldn't do that job. I probably wouldn't last a second at a war zone. My strength is elsewhere, and that is what I realised today. And it felt so important!

Ymmärsin jotakin tärkeää tänään, kun valokuvaaja Lydia Goldblatt piti meille luennon ja tutorialin. Luento oli kiinnostava ja tutorial oli ehkä paras vierailevan luennoitsijan tutorial, jossa olen koskaan ollut. Hän antoi kaikille tasavertaisesti positiivista ja rakentavaa palautetta, ja hän sai minut katsomaan omia kuviani ja asennoitumaan itseeni kuvaajana uudella tavalla.

Lydia Goldblatt on hyvin fiksu ihminen ja taitava valokuvaaja. Minusta hän on aivan mahtava tyyppi! Jossain vaiheessa luentoaan hän sanoi, että koska hän ei ole kovin pelottava henkilö, hän saa usein tilauksia tehdä töitä sellaisten ihmisten kanssa, jotka eivät ole mielellään kuvattavina tai saa kuvattavaksi sellaisia tilanteita, jotka ovat jollain tapaa arkaluontoisia. Luonteensa takia hän pääsee välillä sellaisiin paikkoihin, joihin kaikilla ei ole pääsyä.

Olen ajatellut, että yksi heikkouksistani valokuvaajana on se, että en mene vaarallisiin paikkoihin. Mutta voihan olla, että tulevaisuudessa saatan päästä kuvaamaan tilanteita, joihin pelottomat dokumentaariset kuvaajat eivät pääse, koska minäkään en ole kovin pelottava tyyppi. Ihailen sotakuvaajia, mutta tiedän, että en selviäisi sotaa käyvillä alueilla sekuntiakaan. Vahvuuteni ovat muualla ja sen tajusin tänään. Ja se tuntui tosi tärkeältä havainnolta!
