Opening and closing doors – Aukeavat ja sulkeutuvat ovet

I've always thought that I'm quite practical person, so I was quite surprised when I realized that I like writings of great philosophers (I'm writing my dissertation at the moment). Here is an extract of Gaston Bachelard's book 'The Poetics of Space' that I really like:

"How concrete everything becomes in the world of the spirit when an object, a mere door, can give images of hesitation, temptation, desire, security, welcome and respect. If one were to give an account of all the doors one has closed and opened, of all the doors one would like to re-open, one would have to tell the story of one's entire life. But is he who opens a door and he who closes it the same being?" Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

I feel that this is true in my own life. I've open and closed some doors on purpose, and sometimes doors have closed by accident. And after that life has gone in to certain direction. When I moved to England it was supposed to be one year experiment, but now this is my third year here. One of the things I like here are the misty and foggy weathers, there is something mystical and fascinating in them. These images were taken in a foggy night in Farnham. 

Olen pitänyt itseäni aika käytännöllisenä ihmisenä, joten hieman yllätyin, kun innostuin filosofien kirjoituksista (kirjoitan parhaillaan tutkielmaa). Tässä katkelma Gaston Bachelardin kirjasta The Poetics of Space, josta tykkään kovasti:

Koen, että tämä pitää paikkansa omassa elämässäni. Olen tarkoituksella avannut ja sulkenut joitakin ovia, mutta joskus se on tapahtunut myös erehdyksessä. Ja sen jälkeen elämä on mennyt tiettyyn suuntaan. Englantiin muuttokin oli tarkoitus olla alun perin yhden vuoden kokemus, mutta olen täällä nyt kolmatta vuotta. Yksi niistä asioista joista tykkään täällä, on sumuiset englantilaiset säät, koska niissä on jotain mystistä ja kiehtovaa. Nämä kuvat on otettu yhtenä sumuisena yönä Farnhamissa. 

Brighton Photo Fringe & Photo Biennial

The Light at the End of the World by Rob Macdonald

Rob Macdonald has images of Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong in his exhibition - paired with a show in Shoreditch. He has a great way of capturing light in his images for example in the series 'The Light Thief'.

Delicate Threads by Tess Zahn

Because I Cannot See by Tom Pullen

'Because I Cannot See' is an exhibition that engages people with a sensory experience. It is a photography exhibition that can be also fully experienced by the visually impaired since the exhibition includes 3D tactile portraits alongside traditional photographic prints.

Brighton on yksi lempipaikoistani Englannissa. Noin kaksi vuotta sitten kävin siellä edellisen kerran, joten nyt on taas aika käväistä siellä uudelleen. At the backstage of London Fashion Week

Saavuin viikko sitten torstaina tänne Englantiin, ja heti seuraavana päivänä pääsin näkemään, mitä tapahtuu Lontoon muotiviikkojen backstagella. Toimin valokuvaaja Eeva Rinteen assistenttina kolmessa eri näytöksessä, joista ensimmäinen oli Ong-Oaj Pairam näytös, toinen Swedish School of Textiles näytös ja kolmas Kingston MA Show. Takahuoneen tungos ja hektisyys oli jotain sellaista, jota en ole ennen kokenut. Huone oli täynnä malleja, kampaajia, suunnittelijoita, valokuvaajia, videokuvaajia, vaaterekkejä yms. Mallit ja vaatteet olivat ihan käsittämättömän kauniita. Viimeisessä näytöksessä pääsin kuvaamaan catwalkia, joka oli ehkä kaikista paras osuus koko tapahtuman aikana.

I arrived last thursday to England, and the next day I had the chance to see what happens at the backstage of London Fashion Week. I worked as an assistant for a photographer called Eeva Rinne in three different shows. The first one was Ong-Oaj Pairam show, the second one was Swedish School of Textiles show and the third one was Kingston MA Show. The hectic overcrowding at the backstage was something I haven't experienced before. The room was full of models, stylists, designers, photographers, clothes etc. The models and the clothes were amazingly beautiful. In the last show I got the chance to take photos from the catwalk and that was maybe the best part of this experience.

Sarjisfestareilla kuvaustiimissä – Photographing at the Helsinki Comics Festival

Törmäsin pari viikkoa sitten yhteen kaveriin raitiovaunussa ja hän kysäisi, jos tulisin kuvaustiimiin sarjakuvafestareille. Mietin sitä jonkin aikaa, koska oli kaikenlaista muuttokiirettä yms. meneillään, mutta päätin kuitenkin lähteä mukaan, koska tehtävä kuulosti kiinnostavalta. Varsinkin perjantaina olin ihan fiiliksissä, koska festareilla oli niin mukavaa. Kuvittajat ja sarjakuvapiirtäjät ovat rentoa ja huumorintajuista porukkaa, ja sääkin oli mitä ihanin. Sain parin päivän aikana lisää sujuvuutta omaan kuvaamiseen, opin editoimaan nopeasti omia kuviani ja säätämään valotusta ehkä hiukan paremmin, koska monesti valaistusolosuhteet olivat kohteissa aika vaativia. I met a friend recently in a tram and he asked if I wanted to be part of a photography team at the Helsinki Comics Festival. I wasn't sure at first because I was moving out of my flat etc. that kept me busy, but in the end I said yes. It sounded interesting opportunity to get to learn new things. On Friday I was really excited cos I had so much fun. Illustrators and comic artists were laid back people and they had good sense of humor. The weather was also very lovely. In these couple of days I learned to make my work flow more fluent, edit my photos quickly and adjust the lighting little bit better because the lighting conditions were often quite difficult. A work placement in Elle Decoration – Työharjoittelussa Elle Decorationissa

This summer I got an amazing opportunity to do my work placement at Elle Decoration magazine. I started searching a place for my work placement in January, because we were supposed to do it on April. In July I got an email from Elle Decoration, and after two weeks of that email I flew to London.

I have to admit that the beginning was really exciting, because everything - starting from the details of making a magazine to unwritten rules of English working life - were new to me. I got to do real work right from the start: I searched photos from image banks and archives, I sent messages to designers and companies, I did studio bookings and helped in bigger and smaller stuff in the office. My work was mainly for the October issue. The summer in London was super hot and travelling in the tubes was quite exhausting, but in the end I got valuable new experience. It was wonderful to be part of professionals that have an eye for details and make a magazine that readers appreciate. A big thanks to James, who guided me patiently from start to beginning.

Tänä kesänä minulle tarjoutui mahtava tilaisuus tehdä työharjoittelujaksoni Elle Decoration lehdessä. Aloitin paikan etsimisen jo tammikuussa, koska harjoittelujakson piti olla huhtikuussa. Lopulta heinäkuussa sain yllättäen viestin Elle Decorationista, ja kahden viikon päästä saamastani viestistä lensin Lontooseen aloittamaan harjoittelujaksoa. 

Täytyy myöntää, että alku oli tosi jännittävää, koska kaikki yksityiskohdat alkaen lehtityön rutiineista ja englantilaisen työelämän kirjoittamattomista säännöistä olivat minulle uutta. Pääsin heti oikeisiin töihin eli etsin kuvia kuvapankeista ja -arkistoista, pyysin kuvia erilaisilta valmistajilta ja muotoilijoilta, varasin studioaikoja sekä autoin kaikenlaisissa toimituksen isommissa ja pienemmissä tehtävissä. Harjoittelujaksoni aikana oli lokakuun numero työn alla. Kesä Lontoossa oli tosi helteinen ja kuuma, ja matkustaminen metroissa oli välillä aikamoinen koettelemus, mutta kokonaisuudessaan harjoittelu oli hieno kokemus. Oli ihana kuulua visuaalisen alan ammattilaisten joukkoon ja tehdä lehteä, jota lukijat arvostavat. Iso kiitos Jamesille, joka jaksoi kädestä pitäen neuvoa minua alusta loppuun.
